Local information
We hope you have a wonderful stay and come to love this area as much as we do.
Having lived here for most of our lives, we have a wealth of ideas and suggestions to make the most of your stay. Below are just a few of our favourite things to do in North Norfolk:
Gimingham village and Trimingham beach
Sedum House is surrounded by quiet lanes, perfect for wlaking and cycling. The village itself is cry pretty and jas a lovely church and mill pond
Our closest beach at Trimingham, is about half a miles walk away. Perfect for deserted beach walks, evening barbecues on the shore or dips in the sea. This stretch of the beach does not have any amenities so is usually very quiet, although it is a popular spot for hang gliders, surfers and fishermen.
To walk takes around 20 minutes. Turn left out of the gate and at the little crossroads turn sharp left again. Continue on this quiet lane until you reach the main coast road. Cross over the road into the caravan park and follow signs for the coastal path leading you to the right, along the cliff top to the beach slope. To access by car take the Vale road turning.
Mundesley village
Mundesley has a beautiful long sandy beach, lined with colourful beach huts. It has been awarded the Blue-Flag environmental award for many years now and offers safe life-guarded swimming areas. It is popular with surfers and paddle-boarders and you can walk for miles in either direction along the beach.
Mundesley seafront has a large pay and display car-park, ice-cream parlour, amusement arcade, mini golf, shop, pub and cafe. There is also a fish and chip restaurant on the promenade.
The village centre is a one mile walk away, or if you prefer to drive, there is a free car park for shoppers.
Facilities include:
Medical centre, visitor centre, cafes, chemist, bakery, green-grocers, butchers, fish stall, post-office, clothes and gift shops.
There is a small Tesco Express on Cromer road. Larger supermarkets can be found in Cromer or North Walsham.

Cromer
The seaside town of Cromer is 7 miles up the coast. It’s iconic pier boasts a traditional theatre and lifeboat station. You’ll also find plenty of shops, museums and galleries to while a way a wet day. Fish and chips, eaten out of wrappers on the pier, is a must and you should not leave Cromer without taking home one of their famous crabs for your tea.
Cromer has some great independent cafes. We love to walk to Cromer along the beach from Overstrand, stop for coffee on Cromer East Beach, (North Sea Coffee is our favourite) and then walk back along the coastal path, via Cromer Lighthouse. (Approx 4 miles round trip).
For the more adventurous, we really recommend Glide Surf School at Cromer where you can learn to paddle board or take surf lessons.
If you have little ones, then try crabbing from the pier, or at low tide, there are rock pools to explore if you head towards West Runton beach.
Holt
The Georgian market town of Holt is really worth a visit. You will be spoilt for choice for cafes, restaurants and pubs. We particularly like wandering around the galleries and then stopping for lunch at Byfords. There is a great choice of lifestyle shops, pubs, cafes, galleries and plenty of antique stores. North Norfolk Steam Railway - (The Poppy Line), runs daily from Sheringham to Holt, so you can arrive in style!
The Norfolk Broads
The Nature Reserve at How Hill, Ludham, is a good starting point to explore the Norfolk Broads. There is a visitor centre here, some beautiful walks and also guided trips on the Electric Eel.
The best way to explore this unique area is, of course, from the water. You can hire picnic day boats from one of the many boat yards at Wayford Bridge, Wroxham, Hoveton or Stalham.
www.TheCanoeMan.com at Buxton, Coltishall or Norwich is good for canoe hire, guided paddles or bushcraft.
Walks on the North Norfolk Coast
There are so many varied walks in this area, from coastal wetlands, woodland, marshes and of courses the endless beaches, you really will be spoilt for choice. If you enjoy bird-watching then this area is one of the most rewarding in the UK. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust visitor centre at Cley Marshes is located in one of the best spots.
We also love the vast spaces of Holkham beach and Stiffkey marshes.
The drive up this stretch of the coast is a treat in itself and there are some wonderful places en route to stop for lunch, especially when mussels are on the menu. Some of our recommendations are:
Rocky Bottoms at West Runton, Cookies Crab Shop or The Dunn Cow at Salthouse, The George at Cley, Wiveton Farm Cafe, The Red Lion at Stifkey and Fish and chips on the harbour at Wells.
National Trust properties and gardens
Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Sheringham Park, Blakeney Lifeboat House and Horsey wind pump are all well worth a visit to discover some local history, beautiful gardens and fantastic walks.
If gardens are your thing, then there is a notable, privately owned, 32 acre garden at East Ruston - The Old Vicarage Gardens- open Wed to Sun, which we would definitely recommend.
Seal Watching
Norfolk has some of the largest colonies of seals, (common and grey seals). The two best spots to see them are the beaches at Horsey on the east coast (during winter months), or Blakeney Point on the North Norfolk coast (for most of the year).
For Blakeney Point you’ll need to take a boat trip- Beans and Temples boats both sail from Morston Quay.
For Horsey: See www.friendsofhorseyseals.co.uk for more information.
We really want you to make the most of your time here at Sedum House and so please feel free to contact us if you need more information.
If you would like to borrow our inflatable canoe, paddle board or surf boards then please do ask. We also have wind breaks and beach chairs if needed.
